In manufacturing glass blades the glass 1, is scored to create a line of weakness 7, and subjected to a controlled breaking force 8. This can cause the glass on either side of the etched line 1a and 1b, to pivot away from each other, forming a broken off portion of glass that has a sharp cutting edge. The glass is a longitudinal strip, fed between offset opposing rollers, one of which is vertically adjustable 2, whilst the other is closer to the leading edge of the strip 4. The scoring occurs across the width of the glass strip, between the lead roller and the leading edge. The breaking force may be applied by a pivotably mounted hammer.
